MG-122 This local merchant's collection includes many
items related to his business. They include his licenses to sell
wines and spirits, his postage accounts, financial and legal transactions,
many orders for wines and spirits, correspondence, statements, an
invoice, and numerous receipts. Also, a stock certificate and some
items relating to his household. Archives

Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy
Collection, MG-331 Collection contains correspondence
between Adam Reigart, Jr. and his family in Lancaster and Philip
Wager and his family in Philadelphia. The letters are primarily
from the early nineteenth century and provide information about
family illness, travel, visits, business, and family chatter. The
receipts and invoices show purchases made in Lancaster and Philadelphia,
especially clothing, fabric, dry goods, and meat. The remainder
of the collection is made up of newspaper articles, books, and an
album of poetry and drawings. The items were housed in a gig trunk
which is now in the museum collection. Archives

Advertising and Promotional Collection,
1862-1987, MG-153 The collection contains advertising
and promotional materials for a wide variety of businesses and organizations.
Included are items from manufacturing, department and clothing stores,
entertainment, grocery stores, restaurants, service providers, and
clubs. Of special interest is the use of both English and German
in a brochure from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., as well
as in the soap-making directions from the Pennsylvania Salt Co.

African American Records Collection, 1780-1984, MG-240 Collection contains an index to the Slave Registers, Mayor’s Register of Coloured Persons or Negro Entry Book, and returns filed within the county. There are official records for slaves and their children in Lancaster County, as well as freemen within Lancaster City. primarily related to Albert Siegler Glassley and his education.

variety of instruments, times and places of the Meetings of the
Friends on the Continent of America, and engravings and descriptions

in Lancaster County Collection, 1971-1977, MG-20 Contains
materials relating to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of
the American Revolution. Most of the material is from countywide

Andrew B. Rote Collection, 1806-1950,
MG-363 Collection contains the business records of C.V.
Rote & Co., which later became A. B. Rote & Co. The Lancaster
company specialized in awnings and ironwork. Deeds, mortgages, and
other property records are for property owned by the Rotes and used
for their business. The record books of the company show accounting,
clients, cash flow, bids, and inventory. A catalog of architectural
bronze and iron works illustrates their products. There are also
stock certificates for a number of local and regional businesses
such as Farmers Trust Company, Union Trust Company, and Meadia Heights

Andrew J. Steinman Collection,
1833-1937, MG-66 Contains the personal and business
papers of the Steinman family. Andrew J. was a lawyer. His wife
was the daughter of John M. Hale, also a lawyer, and the collection
includes some of his correspondence. Most of the collection consists
of the legal records and correspondence of Andrew J. There is also
a daybook for the John F. Steinman Hardware Store, 1811-1819. Archives

Baer Genealogy Collection, MG-25
This collection consists primarily of correspondence, notes, and
materials collected in preparing a genealogy for publication. About
half of the collection is composed of letters to Dr. Willis N. Baer.
A significant part of the collection was given to Dr. Bare by Robert
Bruce Bare, Esq. There are copies of wills, court documents, land
surveys, maps, and photographs of cemeteries. In 1955, Dr. Bare
published The Genealogy of Henry Baer of Leacock, Pa., 1715-1771.

Urban, a Lancaster architect. He supervised the construction of
the Lancaster Post Office at 120 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Many letters
from James H. Windrim, supervising architect of the Treasury Department,
Washington, D. C. Book of correspondence contains details of the
construction. Also includes letters he wrote to his son, Rathfon,

G. Herr. Most of the documents are related to his tobacco business.
There is some mention of cigar brands and tobacco cuts, although

Columbia Bridge Company Collection,
1809-1843, MG-217 Valuable source of information concerning
construction of bridges in the early 1800s. There are signatures
of many prominent people. Documents concern the building of the
first two bridges across the Susquehanna River in 1814 and 1832.

1907-1987, MG-209 Collection includes family correspondence,
photographs, scrapbook, and activities of several generations of
the Miller family. Correspondence of Robert E. Miller and Elizabeth
D. Keller Miller has been typed on acid-free paper and placed in
a binder in chronological order. Collection includes an introduction,
footnotes, and brief biographies of Col. Robert E. and Mrs. Miller,
whose home was at 1271 Wheatland Ave, Lancaster while Col. Miller
served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France in World

of California in the 1850s, an account of crossing the desert on

1812-1954, MG-158 David Bachman Landis was a prominent
printer and the collection consists primarily of his personal and
business letters and postcards. There are a number of Mr. Landis'
poems and writings. Of special interest are a booklet with a synopsis
autobiography of his life and his picture. There are also genealogy,

1818-1879, MG-169 The papers in this collection mostly
concern the business affairs of attorney David W. Patterson. They
are roughly divided between his legal papers and those dealing with
his real estate affairs, such as leases, rent receipts, and agreements.
Letters relate to law practice; one from a client mentions Thaddeus
Stevens as agreeing to collect a note for the client's brother.

Diary Collection, MG-247 This collection contains diaries and journals of individuals from Lancaster County. The diarists recorded daily events such as social activities, household chores, farm life, and business activities. Some writers copied published works and newspaper articles or recorded national events. deeds for the Abbeville property from 1750-1929, when it was purchased
by C. Dudley Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong did extensive renovations
and kept over 75 blueprints of the work that was done. A landscape
drawing includes a variety of plantings, dated 1937. Also, an 1889
colored ink drawing of the plot plan. Includes correspondence, deeds,
maps, photographs, calendar, newspaper and articles, drawings, registration
and certificate for the National Register of Historic Places, detailed

Falk Brothers Records, 1950-1977, MG-343 Collection contains correspondence between Falk Brothers, a retail meat business in Lancaster, and vendors of spices, cutlery, and equipment. Some of the letters enclose catalogs and price lists, recipes or formulas, and instructions on how to use products. Falk Brothers did business with vendors on the east coast and in the Midwest and these records show the products and formulas used by retailers and meatpackers at that time. Archives South, Side 13.

General Daniel B. Strickler Collection,
1916-1993, MG-29 General Strickler was a three star
general who served in the Mexican Conflict, World Wars I and II,
the Korean War, and the Far East Command in Japan. He was born in
Columbia, Pa., educated as a lawyer, and served as Pennsylvania's
Republican Lieutenant Governor from 1947-1950. Collection includes
military citations and certificates, correspondence when elected,
speaking engagements, clubs and organizations, and photographs.

This collection contains both family and business correspondence
for the Griel family, primarily Mr. Harvey M. Griel of Lancaster.
Family correspondence include letters, invitations, announcements,
and ephemera. These examples provide insightful clues about a late
19 th century family in Lancaster city. The private documents of
the family are primarily addressed to Harvey and Katie, with other
family member occasionally included as well. The business transactions
and correspondence concern a wheel manufacturing and a polishing
tool supply business that Harvey operated in Lancaster city, dating
from 1890 and 1891. Business orders, receipts, billheads, cancelled
checks, and a personal business card, are some of the business items
that are a part of this collection. The business portion of this
collection provides information about a 19th century trade that

by William B. Heleine and Rebecca Jane (Jacoby) Heleine during their

son of J. Philip Lebzelter, founder of the Eagle Wheel and Bending

Henry Boyd Neff Collection, 1914-1978,
MG-307 The Henry Boyd Neff Collection contains legal documents
about Neff Taxi, as well as Neff Taxi service cards and correspondence.
The majority of the collection consists of legal documents from
the Pennsylvania Public Service Commission, which later became the
Public Utility Commission. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission
regulates transportation services, in addition to gas, water, electricity,
and telephone services, for consumers in the state. The commission
maintains licenses and fair rates and ensures proper insurance coverage

to Jonas Metzger and his wife, Mary. Jonas Metzger died 20 April
1817 and the major portion of the collection concerns the affairs
of his wife from 1817-1846. Documents contain the signatures of
many prominent Lancaster men from 1812-1846, including Adam Reigart,
David R. Barton, A. Carpenter, A. Brenneman, D. Longenecker, Samuel

Penmanship and School Workbook
Collection, MG-163 This collection contains published
works and manuscript examples of penmanship, writing, ciphering,
and drawing. Instructional books on penmanship and composition,
and the instructional book, "Deutsche und Englische Vorschriften
fur Jugend" (trans. "German and English Handwriting for Young People").
Manuscript examples of penmanship exercises include a particularly
fine early example by C. S. Shaffner Jr., a well-known Lancaster
scrivener and county office holder. The ciphering book of George
Shoper is accompanied by the original pen and several papers that
were interleaved--a woodcut titled "A Living Elephant" and an advertisement
in Dutch by Klaas de Koning Tilly for medicine. Archives

Some of Haldeman’s published works include A Monograph of the Freshwater Univalve Mollusca of the United States and original copies of the Pennsylvania Farm Journal.
