Abbeville: See the Dr. John L. Farmer, Abbeville Collection, MG-228

Adam Reigart Collection, 1795-1906, MG-122  This local merchant's collection includes many items related to his business. They include his licenses to sell wines and spirits, his postage accounts, financial and legal transactions, many orders for wines and spirits, correspondence, statements, an invoice, and numerous receipts. Also, a stock certificate and some items relating to his household. Archives North, Side 23.

Adam Reigart Jr., John S. Murphy Collection, MG-331  Collection contains correspondence between Adam Reigart, Jr. and his family in Lancaster and Philip Wager and his family in Philadelphia. The letters are primarily from the early nineteenth century and provide information about family illness, travel, visits, business, and family chatter. The receipts and invoices show purchases made in Lancaster and Philadelphia, especially clothing, fabric, dry goods, and meat.  The remainder of the collection is made up of newspaper articles, books, and an album of poetry and drawings.  The items were housed in a gig trunk which is now in the museum collection. Advertising and Promotional Collection, 1862-1987, MG-153  The collection contains advertising and promotional materials for a wide variety of businesses and organizations. Included are items from manufacturing, department and clothing stores, entertainment, grocery stores, restaurants, service providers, and clubs. Of special interest is the use of both English and German in a brochure from the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., as well as in the soap-making directions from the Pennsylvania Salt Co. African American Records Collection, 1780-1984, MG-240  Collection contains an index to the Slave Registers, Mayor’s Register of Coloured Persons or Negro Entry Book, and returns filed within the county. There are official records for slaves and their children in Lancaster County, as well as freemen within Lancaster City. Also includes bills of sale, a manumission paper, and a certificate for free persons of color. Archives South, Side 11.

Albert Glassley Collection, MG-245  Collection contains items from the Glassley and Siegler families, primarily related to Albert Siegler Glassley and his education. The items include school work, commencement programs, certificates, baptismal certificate, bridal souvenir, fare schedule, and materials from Trinity Lutheran Church. Archives South, Side 11.

Alger: See the Horatio Alger Jr. Collection, MG-177

Almanac Collection, 1775-, MG-92  Collection consists of almanacs printed in Lancaster County and other locations. In addition to general almanac information, many issues contain articles and poems about historical events and persons, as well as government and political information, housekeeping information and remedies, recipes, songs, titles of sheet music, music for a variety of instruments, times and places of the Meetings of the Friends on the Continent of America, and engravings and descriptions of battles. Some almanacs are illustrated. Archives North, Side 23.

American Association of University Women Collection, 1921-1993, MG-3 Papers of the Lancaster College Club, later the PA branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Contains histories, handbooks, minutes of meetings and committees, and reports of the research committee. Yearbooks from 1928-1984, incomplete. Archives North, Side 25.

American Revolution Bicentennial in Lancaster County Collection, 1971-1977, MG-20  Contains materials relating to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the American Revolution. Most of the material is from countywide activities, but includes records from individual town activities. Included are minutes, newspaper clippings, programs, correspondence, photographs, and audio-tapes. Archives North, Side 25.

Andrew B. Rote Collection, 1806-1950, MG-363  Collection contains the business records of C.V. Rote & Co., which later became A. B. Rote & Co. The Lancaster company specialized in awnings and ironwork. Deeds, mortgages, and other property records are for property owned by the Rotes and used for their business. The record books of the company show accounting, clients, cash flow, bids, and inventory. A catalog of architectural bronze and iron works illustrates their products. There are also stock certificates for a number of local and regional businesses such as Farmers Trust Company, Union Trust Company, and Meadia Heights Golf Club. Archives South, Side 13.

Andrew J. Steinman Collection, 1833-1937, MG-66  Contains the personal and business papers of the Steinman family. Andrew J. was a lawyer. His wife was the daughter of John M. Hale, also a lawyer, and the collection includes some of his correspondence. Most of the collection consists of the legal records and correspondence of Andrew J. There is also a daybook for the John F. Steinman Hardware Store, 1811-1819. Archives North, Side 24.

Armstrong World Industries Collection, MG-32 Collection contains information on Armstrong World Industries, formerly the Armstrong Cork Company, manufacturers of flooring and building materials. Several items concern military production during World War II. There are histories of the company, management correspondence, policy manuals, blueprints, consumer catalogs, annual reports, and copies of Armstrong Today, an internal magazine. Archives North, Side 25.

Atlee Family Collection, 1572-1964, MG-22  Consists of material related to the Atlee family, many of whom were physicians. Includes correspondence, photographs, receipts, articles, and books. Archives North, Side 25.

Autograph Album Collection, 1827-1931, MG-118  Contains autograph albums with original poems, prayers, and sentiments, with autographs. Several have engravings, colored prints, or drawings. Some have mementos. Archives North, Side 23.

Baer Genealogy Collection, MG-25  This collection consists primarily of correspondence, notes, and materials collected in preparing a genealogy for publication. About half of the collection is composed of letters to Dr. Willis N. Baer. A significant part of the collection was given to Dr. Bare by Robert Bruce Bare, Esq. There are copies of wills, court documents, land surveys, maps, and photographs of cemeteries. In 1955, Dr. Bare published The Genealogy of Henry Baer of Leacock, Pa., 1715-1771. Banks of Lancaster Collection, 1848-1990, MG-106  Information on various banks in Lancaster County. Included are promotional materials, stock certificates, blank checks, anniversary booklets, annual reports, and a photograph of George W. Hensel. Archives North, Side 23.

Bart Self-Culture Society Collection, MG-271  Collection of items related to the Bart Self-Culture Society and the Groff family. The purpose of the society was for the members to improve themselves intellectually, morally, and socially. Archives South, Side 12.

Beal: See the Rebecca J. Beal Family Collection, MG-337

Benjamin Amos Eby and Fulton Grocery Collection, MG-323  This collection of billheads shows purchases made by Mr. Eby of items to be sold in his grocery store and for his personal use. These items include meat, dairy, coffee and teas, biscuits, soaps, canned goods, automobile services, and florists and nurseries. The businesses represented are local, regional, and national. Archives South, Side 12.

Benjamin Witmer Collection, 1830-1950, MG-132  This collection contains family photographs, a printed copy of Benjamin Herr's journal, judgment bond, correspondence, and a Lehigh University progress report. Also includes genealogies for Letitia Herr Malone, the DuBois family, and the Witmer family, as well as a copy of an original genealogy scroll of the Witmer family. Archives North, Side 23.

Bills of Sale Collection, MG-253  Collection contains billheads for purchases made at Lancaster County businesses or by residents of the county. Most show name of customer, item(s) purchased, cost, location and description of business, date of purchase, and date of payment. Archives South, Side 11.

Bills of Sale from the Commissioners' Orders for Payment Collection, MG-182  This collection contains billheads that were removed from the Commissioners' Orders for Payment Collection (RG 08-01 0510). The invoices are for goods and services provided to the county, primarily from Lancaster County businesses. Archives North, Side 22.

Blanche Nevin Collection, 1905-1940, MG-39  Collection contains correspondence, poetry, and newspaper articles. Archives North, Side 25.

Bridges, Roads, and Turnpikes Collection, 1767-1930, MG-183  Collection of materials relating to and documenting the bridges, roads, and turnpikes of Lancaster County. Includes orders, agreements, proposals, bond coupons and certificates, sketches, contract, payments, receipts, correspondence, Supreme Court decision, lists of stockholders, dedication materials, blank stock certificates, and assessments. Archives North, Side 22. 

Brinton Family Collection, 1630-1946, MG-38  Collection consists of the papers of Cyrus Brinton and his family. Collection contains genealogy, estate records, receipts, school workbooks, correspondence, farm records, tax records, bank records, wedding and funeral announcements, invitations, visiting cards, postcards, and a phrenological character study of Rebecca Whitson dated 14 May 1855. Archives North, Side 25.

Broadsides Collection, MG-357  Collection contains broadsides for lectures, stores, businesses, and organizations. Archives South, Side 13.

Bucher-Ortmann Pharmacy Collection, 1895-1967, MG-211  This collection contains memorabilia from the Bucher Pharmacy and Ortmann Pharmacy in Columbia, including an account book and prescription recipe books. The business began with the Bucher family in 1895 and continued when Werner Ortmann purchased the store in 1953. Archives North, Side 22.

Business and Industry Collection, MG-107  Collection of catalogs, newsletters, and other documents and ephemera for businesses in Lancaster County. Archives North, Side 23.

Business Letterhead Collection, MG-254  Collection contains examples of stationery from Lancaster County businesses and organizations. Archives South, Side 11.

C. Emlen Urban Collection, 1889-1939, MG-100  Collection consists of records by C. Emlen Urban, a Lancaster architect. He supervised the construction of the Lancaster Post Office at 120 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Many letters from James H. Windrim, supervising architect of the Treasury Department, Washington, D. C. Book of correspondence contains details of the construction. Also includes letters he wrote to his son, Rathfon, 14-29 February 1939, while on the Italian liner, Roma. Archives North, Side 23.

C. G. Herr Collection, 1867-1875, MG-381  Collection contains correspondence to Christian G. Herr. Most of the documents are related to his tobacco business. There is some mention of cigar brands and tobacco cuts, although most correspondence is about payments, orders, and samples. Archives South, Side 13.

Calendar Collection, MG-70  Consists of calendars containing photographs, prints, and drawings from Lancaster County. Some have descriptions of Pennsylvania Dutch sayings. There are also backs of calendars containing information about Lancaster. Most calendars are from local businesses and organizations. Archives North, Side 24.

Captain John M. Groff Collection, MG-44  Collection contains photographs, many labeled and dated, and two scrapbooks. One scrapbook contains newspaper articles concerning the military and professional life of Captain Groff. The other scrapbook contains military records including special orders, certificates, passes, correspondence, and government requirements. There are also newspaper articles, maps, and other memorabilia. Archives North, Side 25.

Card Collection, no date, MG-180  Collection contains business advertising cards, tally cards, and visiting cards. The greeting cards include Valentine's Day, Christmas, Easter, birthday, and anniversary cards. Archives North, Side 22.

Chamber of Commerce Collection, 1872-1986, MG-60 Collection consists of meeting minutes, annual meeting notices, annual and financial reports, membership bulletins, Lancaster Airport Project, committee papers and reports, copies of the Lancastrian (a publication of the Lancaster Jaycees), Lancaster Air Force base project, Safe Harbor Dam, Columbia-Wrightsville Bridge, Softball Association of America, and Assistance in Downtown Lancaster (the AID Lancaster Project). Includes items from the preceding organizations: the Lancaster Board of Trade, Dry Goods Association, and Retail Merchants Association of Lancaster, as well as Manufacturers’ Association of Lancaster and the Lancaster Association of Commerce and Industry. Charles I. Landis Collection, 1792-1914, MG-124  Collection of papers of Judge Charles I. Landis. Includes correspondence, autographs, and information on the Philadelphia and Lancaster Turnpike. Also, a record book from Paradise, Pa., 1806-1860, containing photographs, records of the Paradise Menonist Meeting House, and various pamphlets. Archives North, Side 23.

Civil War Collection, 1859-1990, MG-18  Consists of material acquired over many years from different sources. Coverage is of Lancaster County soldiers and of daily life in the county during the Civil War. Contains records of various military units, family correspondence, "Home Front" papers, Civil War era diaries, the Captain John R. Bricker/Dept. of Commissary papers, celebration and reunion materials, photographs, newspaper clippings, and general orders. Archives North, Side 25.

Coleman Papers Collection, MG-275  This collection contains original documents, genealogy, magazines, newspapers, and photographs relating to the Coleman and allied families and the history of Elizabeth Furnace/Farms. The original items include deeds, patents, warrants for survey, receipts, diaries, account books, correspondence, inventories, land drafts, and various legal papers. The collection is divided into five series. Archives South, Side 12.

Columbia Bridge Company Collection, 1809-1843, MG-217  Valuable source of information concerning construction of bridges in the early 1800s. There are signatures of many prominent people. Documents concern the building of the first two bridges across the Susquehanna River in 1814 and 1832. Includes minutes, form for stock certificate, invoices, legal papers, proposals, receipts, stockholders, promissory notes, by-laws, settlement of stage tolls with Samuel Slaymaker 1813, salary receipts, circulars and announcements, bridge tolls, orders for payment, correspondence, and a stock certificate 1842. Archives North, Side 22.

Columbia Cholera Epidemic Collection, 1854-1924, MG-193 (formerly titled The Marietta Cholera Epidemic Collection)  In September 1854 a devastating cholera epidemic struck Columbia. In this collection are records of correspondence with and actions taken by Sanitary Committee, including minutes, accounts, donations, and bills. Archives North, Side 22.

Conestoga Navigation Company and Related Materials Collection, MG-270  Collection contains minutes and stock certificates of the Conestoga Navigation Company and a map and profile of the Conestoga River. Archives South, Side 12.

Coulter and Hepler Land Records, MG-426  Collection contains property records for land in southeastern Lancaster County that once belonged to the Reids, Coulters, and Heplers. Types of records include deeds, land drafts, and articles of agreement. There is also a desk blotter for I. P. Hepler. Archives South, Side 14.

Court of Common Pleas of Lancaster County Bicentennial Anniversary Collection, 1991, MG-133  Collection contains items related to the Bicentennial Anniversary of the Court of Common Pleas, 1791-1991. Included are correspondence, transcript of the commemorative session, programs, articles, Judicial Services Report, and a commemorative postal cancellation. Archives North, Side 23.

D. S. Sweeton & Co. Records, 1886-1893, MG-320  The D. S. Sweeton & Co. records are made up of orders to the company for wood wheels, receipts for payments made by Sweeton, price lists of the Lancaster Polishing Factory, and personal memorabilia including invitations and a checkbook from Northern National Bank of Lancaster. Archives South, Side 12.

Daniel K. Miller Collection, 1907-1987, MG-209  Collection includes family correspondence, photographs, scrapbook, and activities of several generations of the Miller family. Correspondence of Robert E. Miller and Elizabeth D. Keller Miller has been typed on acid-free paper and placed in a binder in chronological order. Collection includes an introduction, footnotes, and brief biographies of Col. Robert E. and Mrs. Miller, whose home was at 1271 Wheatland Ave, Lancaster while Col. Miller served with the American Expeditionary Forces in France in World War I. Also, volumes I and II of An American Family in the 20th Century and the materials used to compile it. David B. Hackman Collection, 1850-1896, MG-72  Collection contains the original and typed copies of correspondence describing life in the gold fields of California in the 1850s, an account of crossing the desert on the way west, and a journal describing the sea voyage home. There are also two photographs relevant to the gold rush. Mr. Hackman's obituary is also included. Archives North, Side 24.

David Bachman Landis Collection, 1812-1954, MG-158  David Bachman Landis was a prominent printer and the collection consists primarily of his personal and business letters and postcards. There are a number of Mr. Landis' poems and writings. Of special interest are a booklet with a synopsis autobiography of his life and his picture. There are also genealogy, family papers, membership cards, and obituaries. Archives North, Side 23.

David Lynch Collection, 1834-1862, MG-173  Consists of correspondence between David Lynch, Esq. and James Buchanan of a political or legal nature, personal letters, letters of Mrs. Lynch regarding an interest-free loan, and two letters to James K. Polk. Archives North, Side 22.

David W. Patterson Collection, 1818-1879, MG-169  The papers in this collection mostly concern the business affairs of attorney David W. Patterson. They are roughly divided between his legal papers and those dealing with his real estate affairs, such as leases, rent receipts, and agreements. Letters relate to law practice; one from a client mentions Thaddeus Stevens as agreeing to collect a note for the client's brother. Also includes promissory notes. Archives North, Side 22.

Daybook and Ledger Collection, MG-266  Collection contains record books for individuals, businesses, associations, turnpike companies, fire companies, attorneys, municipalities, and others. The records include meeting minutes, accounts, stock information, and sale records. Archives South, Side 12.

Diary Collection, MG-247  This collection contains diaries and journals of individuals from  Lancaster County. The diarists recorded daily events such as social activities, household chores, farm life, and business activities. Some writers copied published works and newspaper articles or recorded national events. Subjects that are mentioned include the Stock Market crash of 1929, “The Volstead Blues,” travel, World Wars I and II, weather, genealogy, and items of local interest. Archives South, Side 11.

Diffenderfer: See the Frank R. Diffenderfer Collection, MG-166

Diffenderffer Family Papers, MG-410  This collection contains items that have been passed down through generations of the Diffenderffer family. Deeds for tracts of land in New Holland date back to the creation of New Design, the village that preceded New Holland. Correspondence and some manuscripts pertain to J. P. McCaskey’s life and accomplishments. F. R. Diffenderffer’s manuscripts on Easter Day and Conrad Weiser are preserved with this collection, as well as poems, a program for the C. Elvin Haupt School, and a claim of F. R. Diffenderffer & Co. against the State of Texas. Archives South, Side 14.

Diller: See the Harriet Diller Collection, MG-88

Dr. Elizabeth Bricker Collection, 1733-1954, MG-36  Contains records of the Bricker family of Cocalico Twp., Brickerville, and Lititz. Included are genealogical charts, correspondence, family histories, wills, photographs, land surveys, legal papers, and Bricker Store account books. There are also advertising fliers, merchant catalogs, political papers and pamphlet, and two almanacs. Original documents and copies. Archives North, Side 25.

Dr. John L. Farmer, Abbeville Collection, 1717-1995, MG-228   Collection contains deeds for the Abbeville property from 1750-1929, when it was purchased by C. Dudley Armstrong. Mr. Armstrong did extensive renovations and kept over 75 blueprints of the work that was done. A landscape drawing includes a variety of plantings, dated 1937. Also, an 1889 colored ink drawing of the plot plan. Includes correspondence, deeds, maps, photographs, calendar, newspaper and articles, drawings, registration and certificate for the National Register of Historic Places, detailed renovation drawings and notes, concert and tour materials, and burglary reports. Dr. Levi W. Pownall Collection, 1866-1984, MG-187  Collection includes correspondence of Eliza and Sarah Pownall, invoices for Dr. Pownall's farm, personal memory book of Frances Broomell, stock correspondence for Eliza and Sarah, Henry and Frances Broomell's wedding certificate, bank deposit book, and directions to the family cemetery plot. Archives North, Side 23.

E. Oscar Sneath Collection, 1925-1982, MG-31  Collection contains a high school yearbook, high school and college diplomas, high school and college commencement programs, college pennant and Niagara Falls pennant, and a college letter. There are also newspapers and a newspaper article. Photographs, including several of the Low Grade Railroad at Frey's Hollow near Highville, Pa. Also a photo album, cornhusk doll, and Father Christmas ornament. Archives North, Side 25.

Earl F. Rebman Papers, MG-409, Series 1 World War II Salvage Drive  Collection contains information about the National Salvage Drive during World War II and records of Lancaster County’s involvement from 1942-1946. Bulletins issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, national promotional materials, posters, and newsletters provide background information for the campaign. Flyers, advertisements, newspaper articles, salvage and donation receipts, correspondence, and reports show activities and collection totals for communities in Lancaster County. Archives South, Side 14.

Eastern Lancaster County Historical Society Collection, 1979-1984, MG-5   Collection contains all of the records of the disbanded Eastern Lancaster County Historical Society. Includes financial records, correspondence, membership and organization information, official seal, and the agreement with the Lancaster County Historical Society. Archives North, Side 25.

Eby Manuscript Collection, 1991, MG-16  This is a collection of the papers Clyde L. Groff and George F. Newman used in writing the The Eby Report. Archives North, Side 25.

Edward Hand Reunion and Genealogy Collection, 1805-1984, MG-116   Collection consists largely of information on the descendants of Edward Hand and on the Hand Family Reunion. Contains correspondence, genealogical materials, family charts, photographs, and commemorative booklet 1912, on Lancaster County in the Revolutionary War. Also, three documents concerning the settling of the Hand estate. Archives North, Side 23.

Edwin Stricker Collection, 1960-1984, MG-162  This collection is a scrapbook of photocopied correspondence and newspaper clippings. Contains some biographical information. Includes letters with ideas for the National Alliance of Business Men, the idea to send welfare checks directly to the bank, and the beginning of Operation Cookies. Archives North, Side 22.

Eichholtz and Heinitsh Collection, MG-346  Collection contains items pertaining to Eichholtz and Heinitsh families. There is a typed copy of Jacob's autobiography and a letter from his granddaughter. The remaining documents refer to mortgage and property agreements and settling the estates of Leonard Eichholtz and Charles Heinitsh. Archives South, Side 13.

Eleanor Fulton, Presbyterian Collection, 1703-1991, MG-50  The work of Eleanor Fulton, a professional researcher. Contains information on the Presbyterian Church in Lancaster County, including First Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Donegal Presbyterian Church. Also, genealogy notes for local families and St. James Episcopal Church. Archives North, Side 25.  

Elias S. Nolt Collection, MG-348  Collection contains documents related to Elias S. Nolt's guardianship of the Fry and Railing children. Archives South, Side 10.

Ellsworth Edwards Collection, 1872-1933, MG-37  Contains Edwards family materials including correspondence and family photographs. Archives North, Side 25.

Ephrata Cloister Collection, 1753-1967, MG-81  Collection of items relating to the Society of Seventh Day Baptists and   Ephrata Cloister. Legal papers deal with a dispute concerning the election of trustees and mismanagement of the estate. There are brief histories of the Cloister, poems, publications, programs, tourist brochures, and a pow-wow book. Archives North, Side 23.

Evans: See the Melvern R. Evans Collection, MG-160

Evelyn A. Benson Collection, [1953-1971], MG-52  Collection consists primarily of research notes and correspondence regarding the genealogical research Ms. Benson did for various clients. Of particular interest may be notes on the family of botanist John Bartram, early fur trader Patrick Boyd and his family's dealings with the Slaymakers, and photocopies of poems and writings of Susanna Wright. Ms. Benson's research mentions many families corollary to her main surname search subjects. Includes letters, envelopes, and research notes. Archives North, Side 25.

Exchange Club of East Hempfield Twp. Collection, 1946-1985, MG-111  The Exchange Club was a service organization located in East Hempfield Township. Collection includes membership lists, history, board minutes, correspondence, financial records, activities albums, state level Exchange Club records, and programs. Archives North, Side 23.

F. W. Woolworth Collection, 1904-1979, MG-105  Contains information on the F. W. Woolworth Store, founded in Lancaster in 1879. Includes Anniversary booklets, program, menu, annual report, and correspondence. Archives North, Side 23.  

Falk Brothers Records, 1950-1977, MG-343  Collection contains correspondence between Falk Brothers, a retail meat business in Lancaster, and vendors of spices, cutlery, and equipment. Some of the letters enclose catalogs and price lists, recipes or formulas, and instructions on how to use products. Falk Brothers did business with vendors on the east coast and in the Midwest and these records show the products and formulas used by retailers and meatpackers at that time. Archives South, Side 13.

Farmers' Fair Collection, 1909-1959, MG-146  Of primary interest are premium list books from the Lancaster Fair. The books contain entry categories and prizes offered for winners, general rules and regulations, many advertisements, and photographs of the fairgrounds and acts performing at some of the fairs. There are also Fair Association stock certificates and pamphlets, exhibit entry blanks, promotional fliers, and premium lists from other fairs. Archives North, Side 23.

Farmers' Northern Market Company Collection, 1871-1953, MG-49  Contains records starting with the purchase of land for construction of the Northern Market in Lancaster. Includes financial documents of stockholders, minutes, lease agreements, tax returns, ledger books, bank statements, and forms. Also, some personal papers of Menno B. General Daniel B. Strickler Collection, 1916-1993, MG-29   General Strickler was a three star general who served in the Mexican Conflict, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Far East Command in Japan. He was born in Columbia, Pa., educated as a lawyer, and served as Pennsylvania's Republican Lieutenant Governor from 1947-1950. Collection includes military citations and certificates, correspondence when elected, speaking engagements, clubs and organizations, and photographs. Archives North, Side 25.

George B. Kerfoot Collection, 1828-1839, MG-128  Collection of medical lectures, mostly given by Dr. Kerfoot. Topics include surgery, epilepsy, colds, injuries of the head, digestion, the senses, phrenology, morality and science, and two Masonic lectures. Grand Army of the Republic Collection, 1861-, MG-17  Collection consists of records of the Grand Army of the Republic and allied organizations. Most papers are from G.A.R. Post 478 (Mount Joy) and Post 84 (Lancaster). Included are minute books, burial records, membership applications, correspondence, national and state G.A.R. orders, encampment information, and Post correspondence. Many records are in book form. Griel Collection, 1884-1891, MG-321  This collection contains both family and business correspondence for the Griel family, primarily Mr. Harvey M. Griel of Lancaster. Family correspondence include letters, invitations, announcements, and ephemera. These examples provide insightful clues about a late 19 th century family in Lancaster city. The private documents of the family are primarily addressed to Harvey and Katie, with other family member occasionally included as well. The business transactions and correspondence concern a wheel manufacturing and a polishing tool supply business that Harvey operated in Lancaster city, dating from 1890 and 1891. Business orders, receipts, billheads, cancelled checks, and a personal business card, are some of the business items that are a part of this collection. The business portion of this collection provides information about a 19th century trade that once flourished in Lancaster city. Archives South, Side 12.

Harold Morrin Collection, 1943-1946, MG-358  Collection of correspondence from Harold Morrin to his mother, Mrs. Hilda M. Morrin, in Millersville. Harold enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 and was discharge in 1946. In these letters, he writes about army life; traveling in the United States, England, and France; and his social life. Heleine Family Collection, 1882-1888, MG-322  This collection consists primarily of letters received by William B. Heleine and Rebecca Jane (Jacoby) Heleine during their young adult years and reflect the perennial concerns of that age group: friendship, courtship, and finding employment. Many of the letters are from William B. Heleine's cousin William F. Lebzelter, son of J. Philip Lebzelter, founder of the Eagle Wheel and Bending Works (later P. Lebzelter Son Co. then Lebzelter's) in Lancaster. Archives South, Side 12.

Henry Boyd Neff Collection, 1914-1978, MG-307  The Henry Boyd Neff Collection contains legal documents about Neff Taxi, as well as Neff Taxi service cards and correspondence.  The majority of the collection consists of legal documents from the Pennsylvania Public Service Commission, which later became the Public Utility Commission. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission regulates transportation services, in addition to gas, water, electricity, and telephone services, for consumers in the state.  The commission maintains licenses and fair rates and ensures proper insurance coverage for the taxicab companies. Henry Charles Collection, MG-335  This collection contains patents issued to Henry H. Charles of Manor Twp. for The Charles Brooder and an incubator. Patents include drawings, petition and specifications, and signatures of Mr. Charles, his attorneys, and witnesses. Howard H. Withers Collection, 1859-1896, MG-171  Collection contains items primarily relating to the medical practice of Dr. Howard Hopkins Withers. Includes booklets containing recipes for medications for various conditions, questions and answers on medical procedures and chemistry, lists of chemicals and muscles, and receipts for office rent and fixtures. Also, studio photographs of individuals, two with the name Withers. One photograph of Dr. Greenawald of Lancaster's Trinity Lutheran Church. Several of the receipts have hand-canceled stamps affixed. Iron Industry Collection, 1787-1925, MG-155  The small collection features iron orders and furnace photographs. The 1787 orders are to Mount Hope Furnace for Hopeland Forge and the 1826 order is to John F. Steinman from Martick Works. Photographs are of Chickies Furnaces No. 1 & No. 2. Other items are a photograph of a map of Lancaster County as it was in 1729, a Hershey Machine & Foundry booklet, and an excerpt from a Lancaster Co. article (1843) mentioning early ironmasters and a summary of the 1840 manufacturing census. J. Allan Schaadt Political Cartoon Collection, MG-347  Collection contains political cartoons drawn by J. Allan Schaadt. The cartoons depict local politicians and judges from the early 20 th century. Schaadt's work appeared in The Morning News and The New Era. Archives South, Side 13.

J. Houston Mifflin Collection, 1754-1881, MG-150  Collection consists of personal, legal, and business-related letters and documents concerning the life and affairs of J. Houston Mifflin. Also, similar documents to, from, and about other members of the extended Houston and Mifflin families. Contains typed copies of two letters J. Houston Mifflin wrote to his son, Lloyd, containing an eye-witness account of the June 1863 Confederate advance into Wrightsville. Also, a legal document signed by John Passmore. Jacob Smith Collection, 1801-1830, MG-168  The collection consists of the daybooks and papers of Jacob and Abraham Smith. The daybooks contain notes on workers' attendance, assignments, pay, mill equipment, and names of people with whom Abraham boarded. Also, a court order appointing 6 men to study the feasibility of a road from Jacob Smith's mill to Manor's skating rink. Archives North, Side 22.

James Buchanan Collection, 1816-1991, MG-96  Material by and about James Buchanan, fifteenth president of the United States, who made his home in Lancaster. Includes correspondence, legal and personal documents relating to his estate, pamphlets, speeches, newspaper clippings, family genealogy, and materials written about Buchanan. Jeremiah B. Haines Collection, 1736-1902, MG-119  Collection contains papers pertaining to the establishment of a post office in Little Britain, and regulation and certification of the postmaster. Documents include personal and legal correspondence, a photograph, original stock certificates, bonds, receipts, and a statement. Various legal papers include surveys and warrants, indentures and deeds, land drafts and a plan of land, and other land agreements. There is a trespass notification, a power of attorney, and a resolution passed by the Conowingo Bridge Company. Archives North, Side 23.

John H. Wickersham Collection, 1887-1930, MG-161  Collection of papers regarding property in Fort Wayne and Montpelier, Indiana of Samuel and Lydia Hough, J. Harold Wickersham, and Mrs. Jessie H. John Wise Collection, 1808-1993, MG-19  Collection contains information on John Wise, pioneer aeronaut and balloonist, and native of Lancaster. Includes information on ballooning and aviation in general. Johnny Hauck Collection, 1909-1975, MG-63  This collection contains materials of Johnny Hauck, a boxing historian and brother of Leo Hauck (1881-1950), a Lancaster boxer. Jonas Metzger Collection, 1812-1846, MG-170  Collection consists almost exclusively of receipts and receipted bills for payment for goods and services provided to Jonas Metzger and his wife, Mary. Jonas Metzger died 20 April 1817 and the major portion of the collection concerns the affairs of his wife from 1817-1846. Documents contain the signatures of many prominent Lancaster men from 1812-1846, including Adam Reigart, David R. Barton, A. Carpenter, A. Brenneman, D. Longenecker, Samuel Humes, George Louis Mayer, C. Hager, and J. F. Sener. Also, tuition receipts. Archives North, Side 22.

Judge Henry G. Long Collection, 1752-1888, MG-283  The legal and personal papers of Judge Henry G. Long make up this collection. The first ten boxes contain notes of argument and notes of testimony for civil and criminal cases. The remaining papers include receipts, accounts, documents relating to turnpikes, speeches, stock certificates, deeds, correspondence, and petitions. Archives South, Side 12.

Judge Joseph B. Wissler Collection, 1913-1949, MG-90  Joseph B. Wissler was born in Clay Township on 7 August 1892. He graduated from Lititz High School and Franklin and Marshall College, and received a law degree from Harvard. He later became a judge. His criminal law book is a summary of many cases. Kerr Group, Inc. and Armstrong Cork Company Architectural Drawings, MG-372  Collection contains four drawings and plans for building renovations made by Kerr Group, Inc. from 1970 to 1992. There are seventy-two drawings, plans, and surveys for renovations made by Armstrong Cork Company from 1916 to 1968. Lancaster Board of Health Collection, 1886-1908, MG-141  Collection consists primarily of the annual reports of the Lancaster City Board of Health, 1898-1908. Each report gives names, addresses and burial site of those dying during the year, sometimes with the date of death. Separate lists give names of deceased by certain diseases. Lancaster County Prison Collection, 1869-1929, MG-174  Collection contains commitment orders, discharge orders, annual reports, expense statements, letters, bills, and receipts. The annual reports record statistics of the prisoners including crimes, sex, color, occupation, place of origin, etc. The reports also include detailed expense payments by individual and amount paid, and details of the numerous prison industries, such as product type, raw materials, and amount of product sold. Lancaster County Sunday School Collection, 1899-1954, MG-26  Contains the annual convention publications, under various titles, of the Lancaster County Sunday School Association. The contents of the publications vary somewhat, but generally include directories and Sunday school attendance statistics from the churches in each district. Many publications contain commercial advertisements, while a few contain pictures and drawings of churches and entertainment sites. Archives North, Side 25.

Lancaster Electric Light, Heat and Power Company Collection, 1884-1911, MG-136  This collection contains the contracts and specifications for building the Slackwater, Rock Hill and Wabank plant to generate electricity for the Lancaster area. There are lists of costs to provide lighting for the Millersville State Normal School. There is also a list of residents in the center of the city using incandescent lamps in 1901. Lancaster Law and Order Society Collection, 1868-1972, MG-62  Records of an organization founded by business and church leaders to overthrow commercialized vice in Lancaster by sending agents into the community to check for prostitution, obscenity, drinking, and gambling. Linden Hall Seminary Collection, 1817-1996, MG-10  Linden Hall Seminary is a girls' school located in Lititz, Pa. Founded in 1742 by the Moravian community, it is the oldest continuously operated girls' school in the United States. Lloyd Mifflin Collection, 1751-1965, MG-59  Lloyd Mifflin was a poet and painter from Columbia, Pa. He is best known as a writer of sonnets, publishing over 500. Mayor James H. Ross Collection, 1933-1937, MG-58  James H. Ross was elected mayor in 1934. He was a democrat and owned the James H. Ross Ready to Wear Department Store. Collection consists mainly of correspondence. Gives a fragmented picture of life in Lancaster in the 1930s concerning commercial transactions, the Depression, religious charitable organizations, politics, and the Democratic Party. The Honorable Paul A. Mueller, Jr. is a descendant of the Zahm, Shreiner, and Cochran families on his mother's side. Penmanship and School Workbook Collection, MG-163  This collection contains published works and manuscript examples of penmanship, writing, ciphering, and drawing. Instructional books on penmanship and composition, and the instructional book, "Deutsche und Englische Vorschriften fur Jugend" (trans. "German and English Handwriting for Young People"). Manuscript examples of penmanship exercises include a particularly fine early example by C. S. Shaffner Jr., a well-known Lancaster scrivener and county office holder. The ciphering book of George Shoper is accompanied by the original pen and several papers that were interleaved--a woodcut titled "A Living Elephant" and an advertisement in Dutch by Klaas de Koning Tilly for medicine. Phares E. Will Collection, MG-332  Blacksmith Phares E. Will was better known as P. E. Will. A resident of Penryn, Mr. Will dedicated his life to his profession and his church. This collection contains photocopied records regarding residents of Penryn and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, images of tools and the town, and Mr. Will's obituary. Archives South, Side 12.

Pinkerton & Slaymaker Collection, 1815-1853, MG-308  Collection contains receipts and invoices from the Pinkerton & Slaymaker business. The receipts date primarily from May 1851, with one receipt from May 1853, and are for a wide variety of items. Rich and Grove Family Papers, 1835-1946, MG-427  Collection contains correspondence and ephemera of the Rich and Grove families of Marietta. Autograph albums, school books, wedding invitations, cards, a flier for Accomac summer resort, and teaching certificates give a glimpse of the social and educational activities of family members. Deeds trace the ownership of property in Marietta from Dr. John Huston to Henry S. Rich. The correspondence is primarily from Annie Grove (1921) and Henry and Fanny Rich (1925) during their travels in Europe and North Africa. Archives South, Side 14.

Robert Zartman Collection, 1942-1945, MG-290  Correspondence between Mr. and Mrs. C. S. Zartman (Clayton and Ella) in Lititz and their son, Robert, who was drafted into the Army during WWII. Also letters written to Robert and his parents by friends and family. The Zartmans owned a dry goods store in Lititz. The letters contain information about the business, life in Lititz from 1943-1944, basic training and active duty, various military bases, their personal lives, and the lives of many friends, family, and neighbors. S. S. Haldeman Papers, MG-344  This collection contains a handwritten biography on Ben Keywood, newspaper articles, and biographical information and published works of Samuel Steman Haldeman.  Haldeman was a 19th century scientist from Chickies Creek who studied language, archaeology, and a variety of sciences including zoology, entomology, geology, and chemistry.  Some of Haldeman’s published works include A Monograph of the Freshwater Univalve Mollusca of the United States and original copies of the Pennsylvania Farm Journal.  This collection is an overview of his career. Samuel Bethel Collection, 1762-1931, MG-74  Consists of papers of the Bethel family. Samuel Bethel developed land on the west side of South Prince St., today known as Cabbage Hill. He also owned lots on the west side of South Queen St., known as Bethel Town. Papers include land drafts, legal documents, and family correspondence. Archives North, Side 23.

Samuel E. Dyke Collection of Papers, 1670-1985, MG-61  Samuel Dyke was a noted authority on the Pennsylvania rifle. Collection consists of his articles, correspondence, photographs, research notes, and working papers on firearms. Also included is information on gunsmiths, the Rock Ford Foundation, the Heritage Center, cabinetmakers, grandfather clocks, and the Armstrong Cork Company. Archives North, Side 25.
