This exhibition
is part of a yearlong celebration commemorating the opening
of the Lancaster County House of Employment in 1800 in Lancaster,
Pennsylvania and the subsequent 200 years of continuous care
for the county's disadvantaged citizens on this site. This
200-year history designated the County Home and Hospital (as
it was known in the 19th century) as the second oldest continuously
operating hospital in the nation, predated only by the Pensylvania
Hosptial in Philadelphia. The tradition of care at this location
is today carried on at Conestoga View, built in 1969, as a
long-term nursing facility for 450 residents.
This
exhibition opened on March 22, 2000 and will be on view at
the Lancaster County Hisotorical Society until June 26, 2000.
The exhibit, curated by Dr. Page Talbott of Bala Cynwyd, PA,
features over 200 objects and images from Lancaster County
museums and historical organizations, as well as from other
museums in southeastern Pennsylvania and the Mid-Atlantic
region.
