Columbia California   October 4 th 1854

Miss Miller,

Excuse me for thus addressing you.   But as I have not as yet had any letters from you since I been in California I am at a loss how to address you – Wether any news from me will be acceptable to you or no is unknown to me   All that I wish to acquaint you of is that I am about to leave California to return home.   By the time that you receive this I [shall] be in New York, or Philadelphia.   But before I come to Manheim I should wish to have you sent me a few lines to Lancaster that I may wether I am a wellcome visiter to you or not.   I should be happy to call on you first if it may please you of my doing so   I would furthermore state that if ever I have the honour of meeting you, I can meet you with a true and honourable heart, be assured of that   With these few lines I will come to close, hoping that in a very short time I may                      from him who loves but one

have the honour of seeing you                                                  yours – truly – yours
