Our
Summer History Camp was developed to introduce a diverse
cross-section of Lancaster County fourth and fifth graders
to the compelling story of the Underground Railroad.
Although most campers were familiar with Frederick Douglass
and Harriet Tubman they did not know Lancaster
County was a major route on the Underground Railroad
and many fugitives were sheltered in the houses, barns
and churches right in their own back yard.
History came alive for these campers as they researched
their characters, visited
area sites, created art projects and performed dramatic
skits to interpret their characters. In 1999 our Summer
History Camp received an award of merit from the Pennsylvania
Federation of Museum and Historical Organizations and
a Certificate of Commendation from the American Association
of State and Local History.
