Examine records available nationally and at the historical society: probate, civil, and criminal court records; land and tax records; naturalizations. Learn more advanced research techniques. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of genealogy.


Who Is the Relative in That Picture? Identifying Old Photographs

Instructor: Marianne Heckles, coordinator of photograph collections

Bring along your old family photographs and discover how to identify them by looking at photograph type, clothing, and hairstyles.   Be able to pinpoint a timeframe for unidentified images. Pick up valuable tips on preserving and caring for your family photographs.

Examine 300 years of Lancaster County urban and rural architecture. Learn how Lancaster has interpreted various architectural styles and forms and produced its own vernacular architecture.

No Good Deed Goes Unrecorded: Researching Family History Through Deeds

These important documents contain a wealth of information and can be crucial to unraveling the history of a family. This course seeks to enhance your genealogical research in deeds bay identifying the form and structure within these legal documents, illustrating how to plot a property description and discussing the legalities involved with property titles. The course is a must for anyone working with deeds and land research. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of genealogy.


Count Me In! Using the U.S. Federal Census

Census records are the most popular records used by genealogists, and this session will turn you into an expert. Take an in-depth look at the U.S. Federal decennial census from 1790 to 1930 (and beyond); how the records evolved over the years; what information was recorded from year to year; and how to get the most out of the information you find. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of genealogy.

Join our hands-on computer class to explore using the Internet for genealogical research. Examine various search engines and how to use them. Compare popular software programs and check out some of the reliable Web sites accessible on your home computer.
