Former US President James Buchanan celebrates his 219th birthday this spring with a wreath laying on Sunday, April 18, at Woodward Hill Cemetery and a special birthday celebration at President James Buchanan's Wheatland, 1120 Marietta Avenue on Saturday, April 24, 2010. A time honored national tradition continues Sunday, April 18, at 2 pm with a wreath laying ceremony at the gravesite of 15th US President James Buchanan to honor the former President's birthday. (Buchanan celebrates his 219th birthday April 23.) The ceremony takes place this year on Sunday, April 18, at his gravesite in Woodward Hill Cemetery, 538 E Strawberry Street in Lancaster. Students from Buchanan Elementary School will dress in period clothing and participate along with representatives from the PA National Guard. Two students, Izaiah Albino and Madeline Brown, have received the honor of portraying President Buchanan and his First Lady, niece Harriet Lane, and will assist the general in the formal ceremony. Speeches and tributes will follow in this moving one hour tribute from 2-3 pm. |
