State Senator Smucker to Interview President James Buchanan President's Day at Wheatland Lancaster, PA February 11, 2009 Seventh graders from St. Anne School, Lancaster, PA, will gather at historic Wheatland on President's Day, Monday, February 16 to join State Senator Lloyd Smucker as he steps back into the past to interview past President James Buchanan about his troubled Presidency. Buchanan, admittedly, served during a difficult time in our history as he watched the country split over the question of slavery. Smucker and the students are anxious to tell the President (interpreted by re-enactor Don Walters) that the United States has just inaugurated its first African American President, Barack Obama. The two men will discuss Buchanan's challenges as President in the 1800's and compare the challenges to those we face today. Students will be given a chance to ask questions of both the Senator and the former President. St. Anne students were invited to attend Wheatland on President's Day after 7th grader Aaron Rathsam designed the winning ad for the Lancaster County Historical Society in the Newspaper in Education contest hosted by Lancaster newspapers. Students will enjoy a tour of the mansion before gathering in the President's office at Wheatland for the interview. ###

Sixty Students from The New School View Inauguration from Historic Wheatland |

Sixty Students from The New School View Inauguration from Historic Wheatland
Sixty students from grades 4,5,7, and 8 will gather at Historic Wheatland Tuesday, January 20, 2009 to watch President-elect Barack Obama sworn in as the first African American President of the United States. Wheatland was, of course, home to President James Buchanan, 15th President of the United States, who served this country during the tragic turmoil surrounding the Civil War. Buchanan tried to hold a country together torn apart by slavery and watched as state after state seceded from the Union. It is remarkable that now 60 children will watch Barack Obama take the oath of office from such a location, once plagued with strife as the country marched toward Civil War. Perhaps Americans now do march to a different drummer toward a better tomorrow. The event is arranged by The Lancaster County Historical Society and Wheatland, the Lancaster Estate of James Buchanan. |
