WWII Encampment Invades Campus of LancasterHistory.org May 15 &16

Tanks, Trucks, Tents, Soldiers & the Big Band Sound of the Moonlighters!

One weekend in May the grounds of Lancasterhistory.org Lancaster County's Historical Society and President James Buchanan's Wheatland are invaded by tanks, trucks, tents, and soldiers as WWII comes to life. The date: Saturday and Sunday, May 15 &16, 2010.

Surround yourself with more than 75 re-enactors paratroopers, infantrymen, the Army Air Corps, the Women's Air Corps (WACs), Navy Seabees, the Red Cross, the Germans and our workers on the home front. Talk to the soldiers, witness the weapons demonstrations, enjoy some refreshments, relive and remember the past. 

The encampment runs Saturday May 16, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday May 17, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Special field demonstrations are planned for mid-afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free.

Saturday evening at 7pm it's time for the USO Big Band Dance & Dance-off . Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B, I'll Never Smile Again, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree, In the Mood.....enjoy dancing under the stars to the songs and sounds of the Moonlighters. Break out your dancing shoes, brush up on your jitterbug the Dance starts at 7pm. The Dance-off begins at 8pm and the prizes are good! Admission is just $5. BRING LAWN CHAIRS and settle in for an evening that's sure to bring back memories.

15th President Buchanan's 219th Birthday Celebrated at Wheatland

Free cake, free punch, free student-led tours!

President James Buchanan's Wheatland, on the campus of LancasterHistory.org, celebrates our nation's 15th President's 219th Birthday on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

Between the hours of 12 noon and 2pm Saturday, one day after his actual birthday, 5th grade students from Buchanan Elementary School in Lancaster will dress in the fashions of the 1850's and serve as your tour guides giving us all a unique child's perspective on life lived at Wheatland on this gentleman's farm. Two students, Izaiah Albino and Madeline Brown, have received the honor of portraying President Buchanan and his First Lady, niece Harriet Lane, at the celebration. Members of the Buchanan Elementary School's PTO will serve complimentary birthday cake and punch to all guests touring between 12 and 2 pm. Join the students, teachers, and parents who make this possible as we celebrate our only Pennsylvania President's Birthday. Admission to the Buchanan Birthday Celebration is free. There is no charge for student-led tours given during 12 to 2 pm.

 
Wreath Laying Ceremony Honors 15th US President James Buchanan's Birthday

Former US President James Buchanan celebrates his 219th birthday this spring with a wreath laying on Sunday, April 18, at Woodward Hill Cemetery and a special birthday celebration at President James Buchanan's Wheatland, 1120 Marietta Avenue on Saturday, April 24, 2010.

A time honored national tradition continues Sunday, April 18, at 2 pm with a wreath laying ceremony at the gravesite of 15th US President James Buchanan to honor the former President's birthday. (Buchanan celebrates his 219th birthday April 23.) The ceremony takes place this year on Sunday, April 18, at his gravesite in Woodward Hill Cemetery, 538 E Strawberry Street in Lancaster. Students from Buchanan Elementary School will dress in period clothing and participate along with representatives from the PA National Guard. Two students, Izaiah Albino and Madeline Brown, have received the honor of portraying President Buchanan and his First Lady, niece Harriet Lane, and will assist the general in the formal ceremony. Speeches and tributes will follow in this moving one hour tribute from 2-3 pm.

 
President James Buchanan's Wheatland Opens for the Season

Wheatland, home of 15th US President James Buchanan opens for the season on April 1 with extended hours. Excursions into the past depart daily, Monday throughSaturday, 10 am to 3 pm. 

Step inside Wheatland and explore the rooms and stairwells where 19th century stories and secrets intersect. Guides in period dress, original furnishings and personal items tell the story of James Buchanan, 15th US President, who struggled to calm a divided nation on the brink of civil war. Tour the mansion, explore the period gardens and grounds, check out the frog pond, the privy and the smokehouse. Or join us for a special eventthe First Lady's 19th century formal tea on Mother's Day weekend May 8, Buchanan's 219th birthday party on April 24th. Spend a day with First Lady Harriet Lane, chat with the Servants, or catch the excitement at one of our famous "Martinis in the Mansion." Set amidst 10 lush acres, the President's mansion and gardens are the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable experience.
