#NationalGardenMonth | April is “National Garden Month,” where individuals, families, and communities celebrate the joys and benefits of gardening. These benefits can range from encouraging healthy eating, reducing stress, or, in the case of World War I and II, helping the war effort. Victory Gardens became a significant resource for helping people during wartime to not only help put more food on tables, but to boost morale at home. This photo of Carl and Thelma Netscher shows the couple checking on their Victory Garden during World War II. The garden was located in Manheim Township’s Grandview Heights between Janet Avenue and Pleasure Road. (📸 LancasterHistory) ... See MoreSee Less

#TangerTuesday | Prunus tomentosa, also known as Nanking cherries or Downy cherries, is a deciduous shrub that produces petite, delicate flowers on their long, twiggy stems. The shrub is native to Asia, including China, Japan, and the Himalayas. After the flowers bloom in April, the shrub produces red fruit which ripens by June or July and is beloved by birds looking for a juicy meal. While Prunus tomentosas are very hardy, they can be vulnerable to mites and dislike strong heat and humidity.
