Development & Membership Coordinator (Full Time)

 Short Description:

Proactive, dynamic, and people-oriented, a successful candidate for the position of Development & Membership Coordinator will possess outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, enjoy engaging with the public, and display discipline and diligence with donor information and donor software. A self-managed professional with a highly organized approach, the Development & Membership Coordinator will work closely with team members in education, marketing, events, and development. With a genuine enthusiasm for LancasterHistory’s mission and the power of cultural institutions to make positive change in the world, the individual will help ensure the organization’s growth and success through their oversight of a robust membership program.

Long Description:

LancasterHistory seeks a dynamic Development & Membership Coordinator to manage its membership program and annual campaign and to serve as part of a collaborative, cross-departmental team. LancasterHistory has an active and vibrant membership corps, currently composed of approximately 2,000 households and growing. With the forthcoming Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy opening in late 2025, LancasterHistory is excited to create new membership opportunities to build on our existing program, and this position will have a key role in the coming enhancements made to the LancasterHistory membership program.

The Development & Membership Coordinator will be the key liaison between LancasterHistory’s current and new members and annual campaign donors, staff and volunteers, and the Lancaster community. They will develop new strategies for growing the membership base, and work with team members in LancasterHistory’s marketing, education, and events departments to support compelling experiences and benefits for members. They will also oversee the membership renewal and fulfillment process, which requires a comfort level and expertise with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) databases/Donor databases and software, particularly Blackbaud’s Altru. A successful candidate will be self-directed, goal-oriented, have exemplary interpersonal skills, and excel in all areas of communication, written and spoken.

LancasterHistory exists to engage and educate the public about the people, places, and events that shaped Lancaster County within the broader context of the history of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the United States of America. LancasterHistory’s institutional resources include an artifact collection in excess of 25,000 objects; a Research Center with 2 million historic manuscripts and 16,000 books; the home of 15th US President James Buchanan; and the future Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy.

The Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy is a new interpretive museum and education center being developed by LancasterHistory. Set to open in 2025, the Center will examine the long, arduous struggle for freedom and equality in America through exhibits, immersive media experiences, and educational programs.

General Responsibilities:

  • Directs all aspects of membership, including LancasterHistory’s current membership program and its future enhancement with the arrival of the Stevens & Smith Center, and the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum membership program;
  • Collaborates with the Director of Marketing and Communications to create attractive, brand-conscious membership materials to attract new and retain existing members;
  • Collaborates with the Development and Events Manager to ensure successful fundraising and member cultivation events;
  • Coordinates with the Director of Education to ensure programs for members are engaging;
  • Creates and implements strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and recognize members;
  • Coordinates and ensures timely communication with members in all solicitations, membership fulfillment, and gift acknowledgements;
  • Coordinates activities related to LancasterHistory’s Annual Campaign;
  • Manages all database entry for membership payments, pledges, and gifts for LancasterHistory, including the Friends of the Tanger Arboretum and the Stevens & Smith Center;
  • Utilizes Blackbaud Altru (donor software) to fullest ability to take advantage of features to solicit and communicate with members and donors;
  • Provides responsible stewardship and confidentiality of all membership gifts to the organization;
  • Serves as a welcoming, personable presence among LancasterHistory’s membership base; and
  • Demonstrates a steadfast commitment to LancasterHistory’s mission and vision as an educational institution, research center, and core community resource, and the organization’s continued commitment to Diversity, Equity, Access, and Inclusion (DEAI) initiatives.

Required Skills:

  • Capacity to establish and achieve specific, measurable, attainable, and time-sensitive goals;
  • Ability to engage with colleagues, board members, and volunteers in cultivation and stewardship activities;
  • Knowledge of donor management software, particularly Blackbaud’s Altru, as well as the ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about membership strategy;
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to craft concise, compelling communication;
  • Professionalism, sound judgment, awareness, and discretion in maintaining donor confidentiality;
  • Commitment to LancasterHistory’s mission, a passion for community, and a desire to gain a working understanding of the organization’s history, culture, and philanthropic networks; and

Preferred Experience:

  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in non-profit fundraising, membership programs, and/or donor stewardship;
  • A Bachelor’s degree;
  • Previous experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) databases/Donor databases with preferred experience with Blackbaud’s Altru;
  • Proficient with Windows OS and programs such as Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and Zoom, and online, cloud-based programs such as MailChimp;

Essential Functions:

  • Work occasional evening and weekend events as necessary;
  • Frequent communication with the general public in person, over the phone, and through email;
  • Remains in a stationary position for long amounts of time at a desk and computer; and
  • Occasionally moves equipment of 20 lbs or greater. Reasonable accommodations can be made if necessary.

This position can expect to work Mondays – Fridays from 9am – 5pm. The position also involves less than 10% of time traveling to locations.

Salary and Benefits:

This position is a permanent, full-time, exempt position averaging 37.5 hours/week which includes some weekend and evening work as needs dictate. This position is primarily in-person at LancasterHistory’s main headquarters with flexibility for periodic remote work after six months’ probationary period.

The salary range is $43,000 – $50,000, commensurate with experience.

Director of Development (Full Time)

Description:

LancasterHistory seeks a dynamic and visionary Director of Development to lead its fundraising efforts and to serve as part of a collaborative leadership team. The Director of Development will direct LancasterHistory’s annual income goals related to grants, sponsorships, and major gifts from individuals, corporations, and granting agencies, as well as guide LancasterHistory’s robust annual campaign and strong membership program.  They will participate directly in the development and management of the Museum’s financial, programmatic, and strategic goals/objectives to ensure that they are met, in part, through institutional donor and sponsor support.

Additionally, the Director of Development will play a central role in the ongoing capital and endowment campaign for the forthcoming Thaddeus Stevens & Lydia Hamilton Smith Center for History and Democracy. This position will play a pivotal role in LancasterHistory’s financial sustainability as the organization expands substantially in the coming years. The Director of Development will bring enthusiasm and a passion for LancasterHistory’s mission into building meaningful relationships with donors, board members, and community members. They will help ensure that the organization has the financial strength and community support to make a positive impact and meet our institutional goals.  A successful candidate will be self-directed, goal-oriented, have exemplary interpersonal skills, and excel in all areas of communication, written and spoken.

  • Manages Development staff, which currently includes the Development & Events Manager and the Development & Membership Coordinator;
  • Serves on LancasterHistory’s Leadership Team and collaborates with colleagues on meeting organizational goals and cross-departmental needs;
  • Works with the Development & Events Manager to ensure successful fundraising and donor cultivation events;
  • Supports the growth and expansion of LancasterHistory’s membership program;
  • Creates and implements strategies to identify, prioritize, cultivate, solicit, and recognize all prospects and donors;
  • Works closely with the President & CEO in establishing an annual budget for the organization;
  • Tracks operating support to meet annual goals;
  • Coordinates and ensures timely communication with donors in all solicitations and acknowledgements;
  • Provides responsible stewardship and confidentiality of all gifts to the organization;
  • Works with the President & CEO to identify, cultivate, and solicit prospective donors to the campaign for the Stevens & Smith Center.

Required Skills:

  • Successful record of personally identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts from individual, corporate, and foundation donors at all levels. Experience working on capital campaigns and demonstrated success with grant writing strongly preferred;
  • Ability to engage board members, campaign volunteers, and others in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities;
  • A demonstrated knowledge of constituent management software as well as the ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor strategy;
  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to craft concise, compelling messaging about the organization or any of its current or proposed programs and initiatives;
  • Exceptional public speaking skills, whether talking to individuals or at public events with large crowds;
  • The capacity to balance multiple high-stakes tasks and projects simultaneously;

  • A minimum of 6-8 years of development experience with progressive roles and increasing responsibility in the multi-disciplinary arts, humanities, education, or non-profit sector;
  • A Bachelor’s degree required;
  • Previous experience supervising a team and managing other employees;
  • Previous experience with Customer Relationship Management (CRM) databases/Donor databases with preferred experience with Blackbaud’s Altru;
  • Previous experience with compiling, submitting, and completing reports for complex government and foundation grants; and
  • Proficient with Windows OS and programs such as Microsoft Office (including Outlook, Teams, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint) and Zoom, and online, cloud-based programs such as MailChimp.

  • Access to reliable transportation to travel regionally to meet with donors;
  • Frequent communication with the general public in person, over the phone, and through written text;

Salary and Benefits:

This position is a permanent, full-time, and exempt position averaging 37.5 hours/week which includes some weekend and event work as needs dictate. The salary range for this position is $75,000 – $95,000, commensurate with experience.
