Min. will join LancasterHistory for a lecture on his latest publication, Charlotte Atlee White Rowe: The Story of America’s First Appointed Woman Missionary.

Charlotte Atlee White Rowe was born in Lancaster in 1782 and faced controversy throughout her life. In 1815, scandal erupted when she became the first woman appointed as a missionary by the Baptist Board of Foreign Missions. It came again over her work educating girls at her post in India and once more when her correspondence was repurposed for anti-missionary propaganda. Long overlooked, her story is now being reclaimed. Dr. Reid Trulson will discuss Rowe’s life, the previously unexamined archival materials that led to her rediscovery, and her importance today.

Reid Trulson, D. Min. is the retired Executive Director/CEO of International Ministries. He previously served in Austria and the Czech Republic as the American Baptist representative to Europe and Baptist World Alliance representative to the United Nations in Vienna. Earlier, he served as the Area Director for Europe and the Middle East, the Scripture Union Regional Secretary in Ghana, and as a pastor in California and Wisconsin. Trulson is the author of Charlotte Atlee White Rowe: The Story of America’s First Appointed Woman Missionary (Macon, GA: Mercer University Press, 2021).
