Harriet Lane is considered to be the originator of the term “First Lady” as she was neither the wife or sibling of the president. It was a role that she would flourish in and define. In May’s Special Subject Tour, go back to Harriet Lane’s roots to learn about her life and experiences growing up at Wheatland. Discover what her childhood and time in the White House was like with Uncle James Buchanan, her travels and friendship with one of Europe’s most powerful monarchs, Queen Victoria, and the loss she experienced later in life.

Harriet Lane: America’s Fair First Lady of the Land, a special guided tour of Wheatland, will be held on Saturday, May 7. Tours will be available on the half hour, beginning at 10am and continuing until the last tour at 3pm. Please Note: These tours are not our regular General Admission tours and are not Buchanan-focused.

Tickets are available for purchase online or over the phone by calling (717) 392-4633. When booking online, be sure to first select the date of May 7, followed by the time of your choice. Advance reservations are highly recommended as tours may sell out and walk-in tickets may not be available. Members receive complimentary admission, but must reserve their tickets in advance. All visitors must abide by LancasterHistory’s Health & Safety Protocols for Visitors, including LancasterHistory’s face mask policy.
