The Election of 1852: The Road to Disunion

On October 28, 2020, Dr. Randall M. Miller will join LancasterHistory’s Director of President James Buchanan’s Wheatland, Patrick Clarke, virtually for a special Presidential Scholar Interview. During the virtual event, Clarke and Miller will discuss the historical context of the 1852 election and its relationship to James Buchanan’s political ambitions and prospects, both then and after. They will also explore the coming apart of the Second American Party System amid the politics of slavery, and the character of political discourse and engagement.
Randall M. Miller, Ph.D. is the William Dirk Warren ’50 Sesquicentennial Chair and Professor of History at Saint Joseph’s University. He is the author or editor of numerous books that include (as co-editor) Religion and the American Civil War (Oxford University Press), and The Birth of the Grand Old Party: The Republicans’ First Generation (University of Pennsylvania Press); and “Dear Master”: Letters of a Slave Family (Cornell University Press; rev. & enlarged ed., University of Georgia Press.) Dr. Miller has been a consultant for, and appeared in, documentaries on American culture and history, the Civil War, politics, religion, African-American culture and life, slavery, Philadelphia life and politics, and other topics, which have aired on national cable and public broadcast channels and regional and local television and are used in schools across the country.
