The Music of Ephrata Cloister
The Music of Ephrata Cloister
REGISTRATION FOR PROGRAM NOW OPEN
On Thursday, December 9, musicologist Christopher Dylan Herbert will join LancasterHistory to share his work exploring the history of the Ephrata Cloister, an 18th-century celibate commune located in Lancaster County, and its music.
The solitary sisters and brothers of the Ephrata Cloister produced a variety of printed hymnals and music manuscripts, leaving behind a large corpus of material that is now located in various libraries, archives, and private collections in the United States and United Kingdom. Herbert’s research reveals America’s first known women composers, Sister Föben, born Christianna Lassle (1717–1784), Sister Ketura, born Catherine Hagamann (1718–1797), and Sister Hanna, born Hannah Lichty (1714–1793).
Christopher Dylan Herbert is an American baritone and musicologist who performs concerts, recitals, and operas throughout the world. He is a two-time GRAMMY® nominee in the Chamber Music/Small Ensemble category, and he is a Gramophone Award finalist in the field of Early Music. For ten years, he recorded and toured extensively with his ensemble, New York Polyphony. Chris produced Voices in the Wilderness, an album that includes the compositions of the female composers of the Ephrata Cloister, and was recorded in the Meetinghouse at the cloister, the original building the music would have been intended for.
