Veteran Reconciliation After the Civil War
On Thursday, September 15, local author and journalist Jack Brubaker will join LancasterHistory for a lecture on his latest publication, Sons of East Tennessee: Civil War Veterans Divided and Reconciled. Reconciliation following the Civil War was a difficult process for many veterans. This was true of soldiers who returned to Northern cities such as Lancaster, as well as to Southern cities such a Knoxville. Local author and journalist Jack Brubaker will discuss his latest book, the story of two East Tennessee fathers on opposite sides of the war in a deeply divided section of the country who met and reconciled at the graves of their sons. Brubaker will also discuss the process of reconciliation as it played out in Lancaster and the rest of the country.
Jack Brubaker writes a weekly column exploring area history and culture for LNP, Lancaster’s daily newspaper. He is a retired investigative reporter for LNP. He has written seven books, including Down the Susquehanna to the Chesapeake (Penn State Press, 2002) and Massacre of the Conestogas (The History Press, 2010). He is a regular contributor to Pennsylvania Heritage magazine. Brubaker has talked about his books and other historical subjects to more than 150 groups in Central Pennsylvania. In May he promoted his new book, Sons of East Tennessee: Civil War Veterans Divided and Reconciled, on a tour through East Tennessee and Southside Virginia. Brubaker and his wife, Christine, a longtime conservationist, live in Lancaster.

This event is expected to take place in person at LancasterHistory and online on Thursday, September 15. The doors open and check in begins at 6:30pm. The lecture will begin at 7pm. The lecture will also be streamed at 7pm to YouTube for those who wish to join us for the lecture virtually.
The program is free and open to the public but requires advance registration in order to guarantee a seat or to receive your link to the presentation. Due to capacity restrictions, at-door tickets may not be available. Advance registration is strongly encouraged. After the livestream ends, the video will be available on LancasterHistory’s YouTube channel.
