Biographical and Historical Note: In 1808, Jacob Minnich built a hotel about 6 miles west of Lancaster, in what would eventually become Landisville. Over the next few years a blacksmith shop, a distillery, and a few more homes were constructed in the surrounding area, and in 1825 John Landis established a store in one of the original buildings. Landis applied to have a post-office established in the town, and once it had been agreed on by the Postal Service, he was appointed post-master and given the task of naming the post-office. The residents of the town originally petitioned to have the town names “Minnichville” but Jacob Minnich was against the idea, and insisted on calling the town “Landisville”, after their post-master, instead.
