Administrative/Biographical History:

The Linnaean Society of Lancaster County

Its founding members, including Simon Snyder Rathvon and Jacob Stauffer, chartered the Linnaean Society of Lancaster City and County, Pennsylvania in 1862. The group was named for Carolus Linnaeaus, the Swedish botanist who invented the classification system for flora and fauna. The founding principles of the society were to learn and study their surrounding environment including geology, botany and zoology. The organization discontinued its practices during the 1920s.

The Tucquan Club of Lancaster

Formed out of the Linnaean Society as the Tucquan Scientific and Piscatorial Association in 1869, the Tucquan Club was a camping association for men. The original group consisted of twenty members who wanted a retreat away from the busy life of Lancaster City. Originally an annual four-day camping outing in July, it developed into a week long vacation which changed location every two to four years until 1909. In 1909, the members decided to hold the annual encampment at York Furnace Springs in York County. The Tucquan Club adopted a constitution and a set of by-laws in 1872; the by-laws mandated elections be held during their annual outing and defined the purpose of the group—to discover more about fishing, botany and science.
