Emperor’s Porcelain Bowl Ornament

One of the most unique items in the LancasterHistory Collections is a large, Japanese porcelain bowl. The bowl was created in c. 1860 by craftsman Jihei Kawamoto and gifted to the United States from the Tokugawa Shogunate. The bowl was a gift in appreciation for the hospitality shown by the United States when the received the first embassy from Japan in 1860.

Description

One of the most unique items in the LancasterHistory Collections is a large, Japanese porcelain bowl. The bowl was created in c. 1860 by craftsman Jihei Kawamoto and gifted to the United States from the Tokugawa Shogunate. The bowl was a gift in appreciation for the hospitality shown by the United States when the received the first embassy from Japan in 1860. The bowl includes the Emperor’s personal symbol, alongside imagery of turtles, a popular symbol in Japanese cultural and history representing longevity and good fortune.

Ornament is ~ 3.25 x 3.x25 inches square and made out of a silver metal by The Charleston Mint. A description on the back explains more about the ornament. Ornament comes in a box and a white ribbon for hanging. (Hanger in product picture not for sale or included in purchase.)
