At 10:03am on a rainy April 25, 1893, the Liberty Bell set off from Philadelphia by train on its way to the World’s Fair in Chicago. Shortly after noon, the train carrying the bell pulled into the Pennsylvania Railroad Station in Lancaster. It was greeted by a large crowd “packed in like bunches of tobacco," according to the Intelligencer Journal newspaper of the day. Drenched in the rain, the city band struck up “Yankee Doodle” and “The Star Spangled Banner."
