Description:  The documents in this collection represent the business of the City of Lancaster, primarily in the nineteenth century. Invoices, correspondence, Civil War enlistment certificates and committee minutes and reports encompass various departments within the city government, including the  fire and police departments, Mayor’s office and market houses.

System of Arrangement:  The documents are currently arranged by subject and remain in the binders in which they were received. This collection will be fully cataloged in the future, but may be used as it is now arranged.

Note:  These documents are mostly administrative records, not permanent records, and were likely purged by the city offices when they were no longer needed. We are fortunate that they survived as they contain details about Lancaster’s past.
