Description:  This collection consists primarily of letters received by William B. Heleine and Rebecca Jane (Jacoby) Heleine during their young adult years and reflect the perennial concerns of that age group: friendship, courtship, and finding employment.  Many of the letters are from William B. Heleine’s cousin William F. Lebzelter, son of J. Philip Lebzelter founder of the Eagle Wheel and Bending Works (later P. Lebzelter & Son Co. then Lebzelter’s) in Lancaster.

Queen St., Lancaster from Ed Diller, Cleveland, Oregon.  Diller sent general good wishes  in response to an unexpected letter Heleine had written at the request of Diller’s sister Hatie.  Return address on envelope is Roseburgh, Oregon.  Postmarked Cleveland, Oregon.  5 August 1889.

Letter from W. H. Taylor, York.  Taylor responded to a surprise letter from Heleine.  “The agent must be mistaken a bought it I don’t know any thing abought it I have no room for no clerk for this time.”  9 November 1887.

Folder 4, Insert 4 Form Letter and Joke

Form holiday letter to “Dear Sir” from F. A. Ferris & Co., Mott St., New York.  1 January 1889.  The letter expressed good wishes for the New Year and hopes that Ferris would be allowed to continue to serve them in the future.  After the printed letterhead the two pages appear to be handwritten but may actually be printed.

A handwritten telephone joke based on the phonetic similarity of “hello” and “hell.”
