Biographical and Historical Note: Hattie Brunner was born on November 27, 1889 in East Cocalico Township, Lancaster Pennsylvania, to Abiram and Mary Klapp. In 1896, her father died, and seven-year-old Hattie was sent to a dairy farm where she worked to earn her room and board. At age 10, Hattie left the dairy farm, and began working for the Brunner family- where she stayed until she was 18. In 1917, Hattie was awarded her Teacher’s Certificate from the Philadelphia Musical Academy, and in 1918 she married Raymond Brunner, and moved back into the home she had worked in as a young girl. Hattie opened her antique shop “The Tulip Shop” in the early 1930’s, and operated it until the early 1980’s. Hattie started painting in the late 1950’s and soon became as known for her art, as she was for her antiquing.
