Description: This collection contains the papers of and given to Francis X. Reuss. Much of the correspondence deals with newspapers and the request for information about newspaper employees. The personal papers pertain to a tax assessment, stocks and acquaintances. Reuss kept an archive of correspondence and banquet programs for the Society of Old Columbia Residents. This collection also contains papers from the Mifflin family, including correspondence and receipts.

Biographical Information:
Francis X. Reuss, born in Columbia, PA in 1847, was the first child of Edward H. and Anna Barbara Reuss. In 1857, he began the study of music under the instruction of Miss Josephine Hamilton. He attended Mt. St. Vincent’s College near Pittsburgh from 1866-1869 for the study of piano, organ and vocal music, as well as German, Latin and French. Throughout his career, he was the director of several church choirs in New York City and Philadelphia and was also the member of an opera company that toured the U.S., Canada and the West Indies. In 1892, he married Anna S. Fife in Philadephia.
Reuss was a founding member of the American Catholic Historical Society and was the first to hold the positions of librarian and corresponding secretary. He authored several histories on the Catholic Church. He was also a founding member of the Society of Old Columbia Residents, an organization of people from Columbia, PA who were then living in Philadelphia.
