Description: The collection consists of the daybooks and papers of Jacob and Abraham Smith. The daybooks contain notes on workers’ attendance, assignments, pay, mill equipment, and names of people with whom Abraham boarded. Also, a court order appointing 6 men to study the feasibility of a road from Jacob Smith’s mill to Manor’s skating rink.

Custodial History:  Two Conestoga map segments, one showing the location of Jacob Smith’s mill, and an 1807 petition by Conestoga inhabitants to “lay out” a new road were listed with the collection, but were found missing when the collection was processed.

Insert 1 Daybook of Jacob Smith, Jr. is a workers’ attendance log by day and worker at various mills from February 1801-December 1802. Details of equipment at several mills. Also, notes on payments to workers and some mathematical calculations. 4.25 x 7.75″, 27 pages.

1.Release of Jacob Smith, administrator of the estate of Henry Smith, by Henry Smith’s brothers, Christian and Abraham Smith. Additional names: Philip Gloninger, John Bonnet, and William Bausman. Dated 1803.

2.Account of disbursements by Jacob Smith, administrator of the estate of Henry Smith. Additional names: George Ross, Dr. George Bard, J. McCullouch, John Gundacker, Dr. Clarkson Freeman, Michael Klepfer, Jonas Metzger, Adam Thomas, Martha Smith, Christian Smith, Abraham Smith. Dated 1803.

 

Folder 2 Daybooks of Abraham Smith for 1804-1809, 1810, 1811, and 1813. Workers’ attendance logs by day and worker at various mills. Included are some notes on the movement of workers between mills. 3.75x 6.5″. Daybook for 1804-1809 was transferred from the library, 1999.

Folder 3 Daybooks of Abraham Smith for 1814-1817. Workers’ attendance logs at various mills. Included are some notes on the movement of workers between mills. The 1817 daybook begins to log Abraham’s places of boarding. 3.75 x 6.5″.

 

Folder 4 Daybooks of Abraham Smith for 1818-1821. Logs of people with whom Abraham boarded by month and day. Contain a few miscellaneous notes. The 1818 daybook notes the death of brother Jacob Smith on 23 February 1818, aged 43 years, 6 months, and 26 days. The 1819 daybook mentions Abraham’s mother Magdalina Smith. The daybook mentions A. Smith as a minor child of deceased Jacob Smith. 3.75 x 6.5″.

Folder 7 A Quarter Sessions court order responding to a petition of “Inhabitants of the Township of Conestoga” requesting the creation of a road from Jacob Smith’s Grist and Merchant Mill to a road extending from the Peach Bottom Road to Clinger’s Mill near the Menonist’s Meeting House. Appointed to evaluate feasibility of this were Christian Hess, John Burkholder, Christian Forrey, Andrew Hershey, Martin Sight, and Jacob Baer.
