Description: This collection contains materials related to the Watt & Shand Department Store in Lancaster, PA. Series 1 includes employee handbooks, job description, beauty salon price list, bridal registry information, a history of the store, a Christmas catalog, a Historic Preservation Trust calendar, and children’s books. Series 2 is a record of the property at the downtown location and at Park City Mall beginning in 1880 with deeds, legal agreements, a building inspector’s permit, and insurance policies.

Biographical History: On 22 February 1878, Peter Watt, James Shand and Gilbert Thompson advertised the opening of a new store, The New York Store, featuring new lines of foreign and domestic dry goods as well as fancy goods and notions. The New York Store opened on 9 March 1878 and was an immediate success focusing on customer service. The owners had an unwritten policy stating that they remained open until the last customer left. During that first year, partner Gilbert Thompson died. Watt and Shand purchased a building located at 8-10 East King Street and changed their name from The New York Store to Watt, Shand and Company. Then during 1885, the store name was shortened to Watt & Shand even though the business was expanding to acquire 6 East King Street. The Ladies’ Ready-To-Wear Department was added in 1889 which included coats, suits, dresses, and underwear. The owners proceeded to expand the business over several decades and procured Appel & Weber jewelry store and Hager’s Department Store during the 1950s and 1960s. The branch store opened in 1970 at Park City Mall. The Bon-Ton Stores purchased Watt & Shand in 1992 and the store officially closed in March of 1995.

Scrapbook Watt & Shand Department Store, 1910-1968 scrapbook was compiled by D. J. Watt, this scrapbook contains a variety of information about Watt & Shand Department Store and its employees. The main subjects are the 60th Anniversary of the store and employees. There are descriptions of banquets and awards for the store employees, as well as bulletins with updates on current and retired staff members. Building improvements, including the installation of the first escalator in Lancaster, are conveyed through a series of newspaper articles. An assortment of photographs, correspondence, programs and ephemera about Watt & Shand Department Store are housed in this scrapbook.

Series 2, Folder 2 Extinguishment of Ground Rent for Lot Number 126 on the South side of East King Street from Jacob M. Long, trustee to Gabriel Hirsh. Jacob M. Long was to receive $200 for the extinguishment and would receive rent from Gabriel Hirsh which was set at forty-five shillings. Attached to the document is a note by Jacob M. Series 2, Folder 13 Building Inspector’s Permit stating that the Watt and Shand store was to install a fire door between 17 and 19 South Queen Street. This cost was estimated by the building inspector to be $1,000 and there was an inspector’s fee of six dollars. 18 August 1967.

Agreement between Arden P Reifsnyder, Christine K. Reifsnyder and Hager Realty Corporation. The agreement is to allow Hager to use land the falls under the Reifsnyder’s property to be used for parking at 33-35 South Queen Street. Signed 28 April 1978.

Policy of Title Insurance for the property acquired by Hager Realty Corporation from Oblender’s Furnishing, Inc. which was on 33-35 South Queen Street. The amount of insurance was set at $28,200 for the property. Signed 19 December 1977.

Series 2, Folder 20 Lease agreement between the Lancaster Parking Authority and Watt and Shand for the pedestrian overpass on the east side of South Christian Street. The lease started on 10 September 1986 and ended on 10 September 1987 and would automatically renew the lease annually. Signed 11 August 1986.

Series 2, Folder 21 Letter from James Shand, President of Watt and Shand, to George B. Myrtetus, President of Total Energy Leasing Corporation, confirming that Total Energy will by modifying the HVAC system at the Watt and Shand store in Park City Shopping Center. The modifications would include the introduction 100% make-up air and a monitoring and controlling system to measure energy savings. This process cost a total of $36,330. Dated 9 November 1979. Acknowledged by Total Energy Leasing Corporation 30 November 1979.

Letter from James Shand, President of Watt and Shand, to Lee Drukenbrod, Vice President of DUSCO Property Management. The letter is to confirm with the property manager of Park City Shopping Center that the Watt and Shand store in the shopping center would be undergoing modifications to the HVAC system. The new estimated cost on this letter is $36,339. Dated 9 November 1979. Acknowledged by DUSCO Property Management, Inc. 15 November 1979.

Series 2, Folder 22 Sales agreement between Elizabeth W. Marshall, George R. Roth, Percy L. Appel, May H. Weber, Patricia M. Myers, George W. Marshall Jr., and Elizabeth H.W. Marshall, trustees for Elizabeth H.W. Marshall and Watt and Shand to sell stock between Watt and Shand and Appel and Weber, Inc. a company invested in goldsmith, silversmith, and jewelry sales. The companies sold the shares for $150 per share. Signed 31 December 1958.

Series 2, Folder 23 Permit from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission to Watt and Shand to place a historic marker, entitled “James Buchanan”, at the southeast section of Penn Square in front of the Watt and Shand store. Dated 31 October 1950.
