Description: Collection provides insight into the Yeates family, local social history, and details of legal business from 1743-1870. These documents have been collected by the Lancaster County Historical Society over many years. Collection includes letters, receipts, articles, eviction notice, advertisement, estate inventories, wills, deeds, treaty, court transcript, drawings, photographs, copy of house plan, post road distances, daybook, letter book, catalog of books in Jasper Yeates’ library, and an alphabetical catalog of law books.

3. Letter from Thomas Sergeant to Charles Smith, October 1, 1827, from Philadelphia to Baltimore, (with note it was delivered to John Yeates in Lancaster). Requesting payment for costs of arbitration and letters written by William B. Tilghman to Charles Smith.
4. Letter from Thomas Sergeant to John Yeates, December 27, 1827, from Philadelphia to Williamstown, Lancaster County. Cites the receipt of the 15 dollars and 12 letters, and the fact that the case is on the trial list.
5. Letter, from George M. Dallas to Judge Charles Smith, October 3, 1832, from ? (Philadelphia) to Philadelphia. The letter accompanied another document (not in the collection) which concerns the settlement of a trust involving Mr. Tilgman and expresses hope that this will result in action on the part of Tilghman.
6. Letter from Thomas Sergeant and George M. Dallas to Judge Charles Smith, November 28, 1832, from [Philadelphia] to Philadelphia. Invites Smith to examine the accounts filed by Mr. B. Tilghman in the Register’s Office and notes that “the case was continued in order to ascertain the character and extent of the accounts.”
7. Letter from George M. Dallas to Judge Charles Smith, April 29, 1833, from [Philadelphia] to Philadelphia. Suggests that a new approach might be pursued to “affect a recovery” against the executors. Requests a meeting with Smith the following week.
8. Letter. George M. Dallas to John Yeates, June 3, 1833, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Requests direction for remitting $400 in part payment of interest due on the bonds in the Tilghman estate. Expresses hope that “something may be affected which will enable the executors to pay” part if not all of the debt owed the Yeates estate.
9. Letter. George M. Dallas to John Yeates, June 11, 1833, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Acknowledges deposit of the $400, and the fees of $50 each retained by Sergeant and Dallas. Outlines the strategy to be used to recover the outstanding balance due from the Tilghman executors.
10. Note. George M. Dallas to William Rawle, August 7, 1833. Inquiry of Rawle about the payment of the Tilghman debts.
11. Letter. Benjamin C. Tilghman to Catherine Yeates, January 3, 1851, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Grandson of Edw. Tilghman informs Catherine that a proposition for the payment of about two thirds of the debt and interest may be forthcoming and it is suggested she seek legal counsel to represent her interests. The name Eli K. Price is put forth as counsel for some of the largest creditors.

2. Letter. William White to Miss C. Yeates, July 17, 1836, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Describing the last days and the death of his grandfather.
3. Letter. William White to Miss C. Yeates, August 6, 1836, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Requesting direction for administration tasks he is undertaking on her behalf for the fund for disabled clergymen.
4. Letter. William White to Miss Catherine Yeates, August 12, 1836, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. More business about the fund for disabled clergymen.
5. Note. William White to Miss C. Yeates, September 5, 1836, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. The note accompanied a paper to be signed by Miss Yeates authorizing her gift.
6. Letter. William White to Miss Catherine Yeates, September 12, 1836, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Regarding the financial instrument Miss Yeates sent to Mr. White and the fact that a Mr. Binney, who is absent, should not be considered one of the parties to the request. Mr. White assures Miss Yeates of his willingness to help her in the matters of the fund.
7. Letter. William White to Miss Catherine Yeates, September 12, 1836, from Philadelphia to Lancaster. Acknowledges receipt of a note for $1000. Expresses Mr. White’s gratitude for Miss Yeates’ kindness to him.
8. Deed of Trust (copy) of Catherine Yeates for the establishment of the fund for aged ministers of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the United States, with $1000 donated by Miss Yeates. The copy was made by William White on September 16, 1836.
9. Note from Wm White to Miss Catherine Yeates, Sept 16, 1836, Philadelphia to Lancaster. The note accompanied the receipt of Mr. Ingersoll and Mr. Smith for the $1000, and also a copy of the paper prepared by Mr. Smith.

Folder 29 Newspaper articles, copies. One of the articles discusses the Yeates coat of arms and explicitly mentions Jasper Yeates. It is dated April 13, 1934. The second article was written by Frederic A. Godcharles and outlines the life and contributions of Jasper Yeates. This article was published in a Philadelphia newspaper on March 14, 1925.

3. Letter from John Yeates to his father. Describes learning navigation and life on a ship, 26 September 1757.
4. Note from Robert Galbraith acknowledging the receipt of a release from John Hudson to Reverend Thomas Barton by way of Jasper Yeates. The note also mentions that Barton offered Paul Lantzinger a deed for 339 [acres?] allowance Bedford County; that John Fries gave a release to Barton; and that Barton [gave?] 298.5 acres and allowance in Bedford County to Paul Lantzinger, 21 October 1778.
5. Letter from John Wright to Jasper Yeates. Requesting Yeates to turn over a note from Henry Stover for a suit concerning Robert Thompson, 20 May 1782.

7. Receipt from Negro Salt indicating he and his children had received some clothing from Jasper Yeates and Robert Coleman, executors of Lydia Chambers, 16 January 1802.
