Green Space
It’s a lovely spring day in 1877 and you’re looking for a lovely spot to enjoy nature and maybe read that book you’ve been toting around for the last few weeks. Why not visit your local cemetery? It’s outdoors. It’s quiet. You might even find a nice bit of relaxing shade. Since public parks weren’t quite as plentiful as they are today, cemeteries often made for the perfect green space. You could take a book, a blanket and maybe even a picnic and spread out among the tombstones and enjoy the afternoon. Some people even made a day of it and visited the graves of deceased loved ones while enjoying a good read or a light snack. This photo of the cemetery at Donegal Presbyterian Church near Mount Joy captured a few folks doing just this very thing on a sunny day in 1877.
