Daniel E. Engle opened the doors of Engle’s Bakery on Willow Street in 1907. As the business expanded, the company moved to multiple locations throughout Lancaster County. The business eventually settled into its permanent location on 102 South Queen Street in the city’s Southern Market in 1957. Although Engle's Bakery sold a variety of pastries, the bakery was known for its delicious chocolate eclairs. Their baked goods were sold in various farmers' markets, including Lancaster City’s Central Market. Daniel's children were involved in the bakery from a young age, and, in 1936, Engle’s son, Jacob E. Engle, took over the family business. Once Jacob retired in 1968, the business closed its doors for good.
